Biographical/Historical note David Epel received his Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied under Daniel Mazia. He joined Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station in 1965. In 1970, he accepted a position at the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
